Winnetou wins sailing race

Advertiser Staff

Winnetou, a Santa Cruz 52 from San Francisco, was declared the official winner of the 13th biennial West Marine Pacific Cup sailing race from San Francisco Bay to Kane'ohe Bay.

Winnetou, skippered by Martin Brauns and navigated by Peter Isler, also won Division E, which included a variety of yachts best suited for the 2,070-mile nautical race that began on June 28.

Finishing decisions were made after all 49 boats arrived with handicap calculations and protests resolved.

Ghost, Kim and Lou Ickler's Morgan 38 from the Kane'ohe Yacht Club, won Division A honors.

Other division winners were: Eyrie (doublehanded), California Girl (B), Inspired Environments (C), Sensation (D) and Braveheart (F).

Three Hawai'i boats finished second in their divisions: First Light (A), Ikaika (B) and Surprise (D).

SURFING

• Perkins in semifinals of world longboard: Former world longboard champion Bonga Perkins of Hale'iwa advanced to the semifinals today of the Nokia International Longboard Bear Championships at Biarritz, France.

Perkins, who won the title in 1996, defeated Brazil's Diego Rosas, 16.60 to 11.85, in clean, 3-foot sets.

Kekoa Uemura, another Hawai'i surfer, met Brazil's Alex Salazar in a quarterfinal heat later in the day.

Five other surfers from Hawai'i were eliminated over the past few days. Duane DeSoto was ousted in the round of 16; Keegan Edwards was eliminated in the seventh round; and Noah Shimabukuro, Ned Snow and 1997 world champion Dino Miranda were ousted in the sixth round.

The winner of this event will be crowned world champion. Longboarders ride boards that are at least 9 feet long.

• Irons, Garcia advance in South African: World champion Andy Irons and Sunny Garcia, both from Hawai'i, have advanced to the round of 16 at the Billabong Pro in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa.

Irons beat Sean Holmes, 16.10 to 15.50, and Garcia ousted Marcelo Nunes, 16.40 to 13.50, in third-round heats yesterday.

Organizers postponed today's competition because of poor surf. Irons will meet Richard Lovett of Australia, and Garcia will face Shane Powell of Australia when the meet resumes.

MEETINGS

• Quarterbacks at the Quarterback Club: Hawaiian Islanders quarterback Shawn Withy-Allen and Neil Rose, a former Harvard and Pac-Five signal-caller, along with state Senator Bob Hogue are scheduled to speak at tomorrow's weekly meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Withy-Allen, a former University of Hawai'i quarterback, started the past four games for the arenafootball2's Islanders, including last night's game against the Louisville Fire. Rose set numerous passing records for the Crimson and the Ivy League.

Hogue, a former sports director for KHON, has been a sports personality for many years before going into politics.

Lunch at the Pagoda Hotel ballroom begins at 11:30 a.m., with the program to follow at noon. The public is invited.
