ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
On the scoreboard of a low-carb mayor

Advertiser Staff

Several readers of our recent health profile on Honolulu Mayor Jeremy Harris wanted to know more about his diet success and health since starting the Atkins diet three months ago.

Well, he's reached his goal of 188 pounds (down from 232). His cholesterol is 103 (was 210), and his blood pressure is 120/63 (was 155/95).

Embracing your inner hound

Is your love life in the doghouse? A survey by Yahoo! Personals found that 85 percent of singles say a person's pet gives insight into his or her personality. For example, men who love bulldogs are humorous but can be immature and reactionary and those who love Labradors are energetic, active and social. At least, that's the theory of Wendy Diamond, author of the newly published "What a Lucky Dog! How to Understand Men Through Their Dogs."

Among other things, the survey found that 90 percent of single women believe that how a man treats his pet indicates how he treats a love interest.

Final word

Jim Belushi | star of the TV sitcom "According to Jim," in a Newsday interview:

"The reason I became an actor is because there are more girls in drama class than in football. Although I did play football, I never got to carry the football. If you don't carry the football, you don't get the girl. ... I just happened to fall into the acting because I was looking for a girlfriend."
