WWII internment topic of talk Thursday

Advertiser Staff

A researcher who has chronicled the experiences of Hawai'i residents sent to World War II internment camps on the Mainland will summarize her findings in "From Sand Island to Santa Fe," at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Japanese Cultural Center.

The event, which is free, will be held in the center's first-floor Historical Gallery Theater. It is the final in a summer series on the internment experience at the center, 2454 South Beretania St.

Gail Ogawa, an associate professor of English at Youngstown State University, will share camp photos, letters, government documents and diary entries that capture the experiences of Hawai'i internees. Ogawa said she began her research to learn more about the experience of her grandfather, who was among the internees but kept no journals or records of those years.

A related exhibit, "Dark Clouds Over Paradise: The Hawai'i Internees Story," will continue through July 31 in the center. For information call, 945-7633.
