Chun's 4-under ties for first

Pearl City's Mari Chun shot an even-par 71 for a 4-under 138 and shared medalist honors after the stroke-play portion of the 56th U.S. Girls' Junior Championship at Mira Vista Golf Club in Fort Worth, Texas.

Chun tied with In-Bee Park (67) of Henderson, Nev., and Julieta Granada of Paraguay (71). They finished two strokes ahead of Paula Creamer (70—140) of Pleasanton, Calif.

Chun leads four Hawai'i golfers into match-play competition, which starts today.

The field of 156 players was trimmed to the top 64 (the cut was 155) for match play.

Hilo's Amanda Wilson shot 74—146, Honolulu's Stephanie Kono 72—146 and Honolulu's Ayaka Kaneko 79—154.

Waipahu's Kayla Morinaga shot 85—159 and Hilo's Kimberly Kim 86—165 and failed to qualify.

Two rounds of match play will be held today and tomorrow with the semifinals Friday and 18-hole final Saturday.

The tournament is open to female amateur players who will not reach 18 on or before July 24 and who have a USGA handicap index not exceeding 18.4.

Maekawa falls short in U.S. Junior Amateur

Sean Maekawa, of Pa'auilo, Hawai'i, shot an 8-over 78 and failed to advance to the match play rounds of the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.

Maekawa finished at 26-over 166 after two days of stroke play. The top 64 golfers advanced to match play. The cut was 152.

Brian Harman of Savannah, Ga., was medalist after a 66—133.

Harman, 17, is trying to become the second golfer to win back-to-back Junior Amateur titles, following in the footsteps of Tiger Woods, who won three from 1991 to 1993.
