Kunia brushfire flares up againFirefighters today were monitoring hot spots from a brushfire that has been contained on the ridges above Kunia Road.
The fire has burned about 220 acres, 75 of which are within the Honouliuli Forest Reserve. Pauline Sato, the Nature Conservancy's O'ahu program director, said yesterday the affected reserve area does not have many endangered plants.
Firefighters had returned to Kunia yesterday to subdue an isolated flare-up.
Halawa shooting suspect arrested
A 47-year-old man was shot last night during a fight involving four men at a home on the 4400 block of Luapele Drive in Halawa. The wounded man was shot once in the abdomen at about 11:45 p.m. and taken to The Queen's Medical Center, police said.
The alleged shooter, a 34-year-old Salt Lake man, left the scene before police arrived but turned himself in at the Pearl City station at 12:25 a.m. today. He was booked on attempted second-degree murder.
Police said the victim and two other men, ages 40 and 35, were fighting with the Salt Lake man, who then took out a gun and fired a shot. Police booked the two other men on second-degree assault.
3 held in attempt to steal vehicle
Police arrested three men yesterday on suspicion of attempting to steal a car yesterday from an apartment building parking lot at 1111 Pi'ikoi St.
Officers responded to a 7:42 a.m. report and found a car hooked up to a minivan with a tow strap. Three men, ages 24, 35 and 39, in the minivan were arrested on attempted auto theft charges when the registered owner of the car told police no permission was granted to take it.
Man, 22, faces firearms charges
Authorities yesterday charged 22-year-old Dustin Spencer in a federal complaint with firearms offenses.
Spencer is being held on a no-bail warrant. He was arrested yesterday on a federal warrant in connection with a June 16 incident in which he is accused of threatening a police officer with a pistol.
OCCC inmate dies at Kuakini
An O'ahu Community Correctional Center inmate found unconscious in his cell on July 14 died yesterday at Kuakini Medical Center.
The medical examiner's office today identified the inmate as Darren Dela Cruz, 27.
Street closed for water work
A section of Hihimanu Street between Ahiki and 'Ehukai streets in Waimanalo was closed today to allow the Board of Water Supply to do repair work on a 20-inch concrete cylinder main that broke last month.
Crews did temporary repair work on the pipeline on June 30. Today's work was not expected to affect water service.
