Youngsters to show their hula stuff

Hula Halau 'O Kamuela, first-place winners in kahiko and 'auana at last year's Queen Lili'uokalani Keiki Hula Competition.
Keiki from O'ahu, Maui, Big Island, California and Japan come together to share the joy of hula at the 29th annual Queen Lili'uokalani Keiki Hula Competition. Presented by the Kalihi-Palama Culture & Arts Society Inc., the festival allows children ages 5-12 a chance to showcase their achievements in hula. The festival kicks off at 6 p.m. Thursday with the Miss and Master keiki hula competition. The dancing continues at 6 p.m. July 30 with the group hula kahiko competition and noon July 31 with the group hula 'auana competition. It all takes place in the Blaisdell Center Arena. The sounds of India

Lotus presents the cultural program "Rhythms of India II" 7-9:30 p.m. Saturday at the Honolulu Academy of Arts' Doris Duke Theatre, featuring the "melody queen of Los Angeles," Hindustani classical vocalist Mala Ganguly. Accompanying her will be Ramesh Kumar on the tabla (northern Indian percussion instrument). Tickets are $15 advance and $20 at the door. More laughs at All Star Hawaii

Sharkey's Comedy Club at All Star Hawaii continues reeling in the laughs with the award-winning comedy of Maryellen Hooper. Her whimsical humor and amusing stories garnered her stand-up's highest honor with Best Female Stand-Up at the 12th annual American Comedy Awards. Born in Long Island but now calling Los Angeles home, Hooper's television appearances include "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," Lifetime's "Girl's Night Out" and A&E's "Evening at the Improv." Showtimes are 8 p.m. Wednesday-July 31 and 10 p.m. July 30-31. Cover is $12, with a two-drink minimum. Open-mike shows follow the show on Wednesday and Thursday, with a $5 cover and one-drink minimum. 531-4242.


A celebration of the piano

The fingers will be flying at "Pianomania 2004," a 10-piano concert Sunday, presented by the Hawaii Music Teachers Association. At 1 and 4 p.m. the Blaisdell Concert Hall will be filled with sounds ranging from Bach to rock as more than 350 students from O'ahu, Hawai'i and Kaua'i take part in the concert, performing in ensembles of 10 to 20 pianists. The ensembles will be conducted by teachers and professional conductors including Thomas Bingham, Aaron Mahi and Henry Miyamura. Thomas Rosencranz, 2003 winner of the American Pianists Association Competition, appears as guest artist, playing Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" with a student ensemble. Tickets are $10.50. A new season with 'Endgame'

The Actors' Group kicks off its 2004-2005 theater season with Samuel Beckett's classic "Endgame." Taking its name from the series of moves at the end of a chess game, this intelligent drama focuses on the theory that beginnings and endings are intertwined, making for a circular existence. Liz Kane directs. The play opens 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Performances continue 7:30 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays and 4 p.m. Sundays through Aug. 29 at the Yellow Brick Studio in Kaka'ako. A musical 'Dream'

Prepare to experience the dream as the Summer Arts Experience Players presents the musical "Dream City." The cast features 53 youths ranging in age from 8 to 18, who are also students at the Pacific School of the Performing Arts. The production follows 16-year-old Patrick as he prepares to rescue his virtues, Hope and Faith, in order to restore his hopes and dreams. The play was written and choreographed by Jamie Fox. Showtimes are 7 p.m. today and Saturday at the Kaimuki High School Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $7 general and $5 children ages 5-12 and seniors; they can be pre-ordered at 394-6547 or purchased at the door.


Family day in Kane'ohe

Celebrate families, friends and fun at the fifth annual Kane'ohe Day on the Bay Saturday. Head over to the Kokokahi YWCA on Kane'ohe Bay Drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to enjoy the festivities, including sailing, kayaking, interactive keiki activities, contests, games, prizes, food booths, community resource information area, craft fair, Xtreme Fun rides, petting zoo and pony rides. Entertainment includes 7 Simple Pieces, Ed Chevy and Na Kupuna O Ko'olau. Cutty from "Cooking with Cutty" hosts. Admission is free. 235-7747.


Sunset is in Pearl Harbor

The city's popular outdoor movie fest Sunset on the Beach heads for Pearl Harbor this weekend for Sunset in the Park. The two-day extravaganza features entertainment, children's activity center, vehicle displays, marketplace with crafts and art and restaurants from the Pearl Harbor area. After sunset, Saturday's film will be "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King"; Sunday's will be "Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World." It all happens noon-10 p.m. Saturday-Sunday at Richardson Field across from Aloha Stadium. Free parking will be available at the stadium. Admission is free. 523-2489.
