CONCERT: July 30-31

Always the biggest birthday party in the Islands, this year's KCCN FM100 Birthday Bash XIV once again offers up a full plate of music over two nights. The lineup for July 30 includes Natural Vibrations, Vika and Local Culture, Ho'onu'a, Sudden Rush, Pau Hana, 'Ekolu, Kekai Boys and Opihi Pickers. Keep jamming on July 31 with Kapena, Natural Vibrations, Kon Tiki, Three Plus, Na Palapalai with Keali'i Reichel, O-shen, Keahiwai, B.E.T. and The Next Generation. Tickets for one show are $18.50 lawn, $19.50 terrace and $26 pool. Two-show admission prices are $27 lawn, $29 terrace. The first 5,000 through the gate each night receive a free FM100 Birthday Bash windshield reflector.

CONCERT: July 31

It's all about the love, honey. Get swept up in the amorous sounds of the Love Festival 2004 as it makes its annual stop in the Islands this summer. Featuring Richard "Humpty" Vission, Nocturnal Sound Krew, MC Supernatural, DJ Rectangle, Tonz of Drumz featuring CRS and APX-1, Doran, DJ Reza, Ikon, G-Spot, Kause with MC Enemy and Bass-X, this outdoor concert has got it goin' on. Tickets for this all-ages dance-a-thon are $20 and $25.

CONCERT: Aug. 6

The summer season is all about the sun, the breezes and the stars ... or the Summer Show of Stars. Get starry-eyed with the rock 'n' roll sounds of Dion, left, sentimental stylings of Bobby Vee, do-wop harmony of The Crystals, and rock on with Dave Sommerville and the original Diamonds. Tickets are $45.

OPERA: Aug. 6-15

The summer is about to get HOT as Hawaii Opera Theater presents Gilbert & Sullivan's "The Mikado." Sung in English, this comedy offers a hilarious look at the customs of a Japanese village through a Western looking-glass. The cast includes Jamie Offenbach as the Mikado of Japan, Kevin Anderson as Nanki-Poo, Kathy Krosovec as Yum-Yum and Cathy Foy as Pitti-Sing. Tickets are $20-$75 for the 8 and 4 p.m. shows. Tickets for the 2 p.m. Aug. 7 matinee are $10 (up to four tickets, as long as one is for someone younger than 18). Group/military night is 7:30 p.m. Aug. 14, with all seats $20.

STAGE: Aug. 13-14

Monkey and the Waterfall Dance Theatre Company, left, presents a blend of Eastern and Western dance and theater concepts with "Club Monkey." Masked dancers and actors perform in this cabaret-style performance, with guest artists including University of Hawai'i dance professor Betsy Fisher, kumu hula Michael Pili Pang and Coco Chandelier. Yukie Shiroma directs. Tickets: $15 at the door.

CONCERT: Aug. 14

Won't you head on over to funky town and "Get Down Tonight" during a dance party featuring Six-Five-O, right, from Las Vegas. Also on tap to help you do a little dance and make a little love will be local bands Aura, eightOeight, Shining Star, H2O and Planet Jane. Tickets are $20 advance and $25 at the door, for 21 and older.

CONCERT: Aug. 14

Start feeling irie in the Islands as Reggae in Paradise welcomes Bunny Wailer, below, and Luciano. A founding member of the Wailers and now the trio's only surviving member, the Grammy award-winning Wailer roots reggae style will be backed by Solomonic Reggaestra. The spiritual R&B reggae sounds of Luciano will be backed by the Jah Messenjah Band. Also appearing will be reggae artists Dean Fraser and Mikey General along with local bands. Tickets are $35.

Also: Reggae in Paradise will be at 4 p.m. Aug. 13 at the War Memorial Baseball Stadium on Maui.

CONCERT: Aug. 20

Here they are, baby: British reggae supergroup UB40, below, is making its way back to the Islands. If you love the way they do the things they do, don't miss out as members Robin and Ali Campbell, Earl Falconer, Mickey Virtue, Brian Travers, Jim Brown, Norman Hassan and Terence "Astro" Wilson take you to higher ground. General admission tickets are $25 advance and $30 at the door. Reserved tickets are $45.

FESTIVAL: Aug. 20-22

It's a one-stop-shop for locally made goods as First Hawaiian Bank presents the 2004 Made in Hawaii Festival. With about 400 exhibitors from the various islands, this year's goodies include food, flowers, books, fashions, plants, pottery, crafts and produce. There will also be chef demonstrations and Hawaiian entertainment. Admission is $2, and children under 6 are free.

CONCERT: Aug. 21-22

Get a taste of Broadway right here in the Islands when Honolulu Broadway Babies presents a benefit concert, "Broadway Mixed Plate." Featured will be vocalists, dancers, actors and musicians from New York, Los Angeles and Hawai'i, including Christopher Jackson, Marc G. Dalio, Audri T. Dalio, Joan Almedilla, Trisha Mae Banquerigo, Bonifacio Deoso Jr., Ryan Jim Cucueco Canlas, Joshua Tuburan, Kenneth E. Vigilia, V. Stephen Raynor and Honolulu Broadway Babies president Kristian Lei. Tickets are $25 and $30 before July 30, and $35 and $40 after. Different sponsorship levels and prices are available for $100-$15,000.

COMING UP

L is for lively rock

Orange County, Calif., rock band Lit is heading this way for a concert at 8 p.m. July 31 (doors open at 7 p.m.) at Volcanoes Nightclub. Also on the lineup: Last in Line and Living in Question. Pre-sale tickets are $15, at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa Campus Center and T&T Tinting; call 566-0644 to charge by phone; $20 at the door. The concert, titled "Summer Heat Rave" and sponsored by radio station Star 101.9, is for those 18 and older.

ARTafterDARK

The next Friday evening event at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, 5-9 p.m. July 30, is themed "Emerging Artists & Young Collectors Night." Attractions include tours of the collections and special exhibits, Q&A sessions with local artists, collectors and art consultants, jazz by the Ned Flanders Quintet, and slack-key guitar music by Michael Tannenbaum. Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase. ARTafterDARK is aimed at singles and young marrieds and professionals who want to go someplace a bit different on a Friday night. Admission is $7; free for museum members.
