Sewage spills near Sand Island

About 20,000 gallons of untreated sewage spilled near the Sand Island Wastewater Treatment Plant yesterday morning after a contractor inadvertently drilled into a 48-inch sewer line.

The incident occurred at about 9:30 a.m. when a Hawaiian Electric Co. crew ruptured a line that leads from the Hart Street pump station to the Sand Island facility. The wastewater spilled into a storm drain and was diverted back to the treatment system, the city said.

Over the next three days, city crews will work to divert the flow to another main. Repair on the broken main is expected to take two weeks, the city said.

Halawa shooting suspect arrested

A 47-year-old man was shot Wednesday night during a fight involving four men at a Luapele Drive home in Halawa. The victim was shot once in the abdomen at about 11:45 p.m. and taken to The Queen's Medical Center, police said.

The alleged shooter, a 34-year-old Salt Lake man, left the scene before police arrived but turned himself in at the Pearl City station yesterday.

Police said the victim and two other men, ages 40 and 35, were fighting with the Salt Lake man, who then took out a gun and fired a shot.
