Public to get view of Strykers

The public will get to kick the tires of the Army's 20-ton Stryker vehicle and ask soldiers about the troop carriers on the Big Island and O'ahu beginning tomorrow.

The Army is bringing in two of the armored vehicles from Alaska and Fort Lewis in Washington state as it moves forward with creating one of the $1.5 billion brigades here.

The 2nd Brigade of the 25th Infantry Division (Light) will be transformed to a Stryker unit. About 800 additional soldiers will be added to round out the 3,500-soldier brigade.

A total of 291 Stryker vehicles, which ride on eight wheels instead of tank treads, will be based on O'ahu. Training will take place on O'ahu and the Big Island. The Stryker brigade is expected to be operational in 2007.

The Strykers will be at the following locations:

• Tomorrow, Waimea-Kohala Airport, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

• Sunday, National Guard Center at Hilo, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

• Tuesday, North Shore, Ali'i Beach Park, 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

• Wednesday, Wahiawa District Park, 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

• Thursday, Wai'anae Intermediate School, 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
