HAWAI'I BRIEFS
200 acres on Moloka'i burned

Advertiser Staff

A brushfire on Moloka'i burned more than 200 acres and kept firefighters from both Moloka'i and Maui busy throughout the afternoon and into the evening.

"I'm sure we'll be there well into the night," Fire Capt. Derrick Arruda said.

About 40 firefighters from both islands fought the blaze near Mo'omomi Beach, north of the airport, assisted by Maui's Air One and two other helicopters contracted from Windward Aviation.

County public works helped with bulldozers and other heavy machinery, Arruda said.

The fire was reported at noon.

NORTH SHORE

Free diver dies in competition

A man in his 30s died yesterday during a free diving championship off Hale'iwa.

HFD Capt. Emmit Kane said organizers of the event became concerned when the man did not show up for a 3 p.m. check-in.

They called 911 at about 3:30 p.m., then conducted their own search.

Divers found his kayak near Police Beach, then, about 4 p.m., found the man nearby, dead, in about 90 feet of water.
