Kane'ohe's balance staves off upset bid

It took an entire club's effort to lead Kane'ohe to victory.

Joe Momoa salutes after he and his Na Keiki O Ka Mo'i teammates captured the mixed masters race in a time of 4 minutes, 9.77 seconds at the Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a Championship Regatta.

Its youth crews contributed and its adult crews rallied from a nine-point deficit as Kane'ohe defended its AAA division title at yesterday's Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a Championship Regatta. Kane'ohe edged Manu O Ke Kai, 70-69, after leading most of the morning and then trailing most of the afternoon at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

"It's gratifying and satisfying," said Kane'ohe coach Junior Parrilla. "You see a lot of your work pay off and you see a lot of happy members. That's what we're looking for — everybody to have fun and enjoy the sport."

Kane'ohe led Manu O Ke Kai, 57-45, after the morning's youth races, but Manu O Ke Kai rallied behind three wins and two second-place finishes in the adult races to take a 66-59 lead.

Kane'ohe closed to 66-65 after two seconds in the women's and men's senior master's 50 races and clinched the title by capturing the mixed senior master's 45 race.

"When it came to our race, everybody said 'you have to win,' so we just talked to the crew and made sure we did our best," said Kane'ohe paddler Bob Chang.

"The key is coach Clint (Anderson) and his coaches," Parrilla said. "Working with 100-something kids is difficult, but these guys have them under control and they work out hard.

"The adults did their part today. It's a complementary of things between kids and adults. One falls down and the other picks up the slack. That's what makes a good club."

Manu O Ke Kai was second in the mixed senior master's 45 race and simply ran out of steam to place in the regatta's remaining two events.

"That was our goal to win and we came so close," said Manu O Ke Kai coach Randy Sanborn. "We really wanted to win. It would make history for this club. At the end, we didn't have the numbers. This is the closest we ever came."

Seeking its first Hui Wa'a title, Manu O Ke Kai threw its best paddlers into the canoes.

"We trained hard this whole week and then we had a runoff (to) put the best people in the boat," Sanborn said. "Like the girls 12 race, we rotated everybody this season and today we just took the best people in the boat."

The closest Manu O Ke Kai came to beating Kane'ohe during the regular season was a two-point defeat on July 4. Kane'ohe dominated the regular season by winning seven of eight regattas.

"The better the competition, the harder you try," Parrilla said. "It makes everybody better.

"Manu is an awesome club. Randy and Moku (Sanborn) are doing an excellent job over there."

Manu O Ke Kai won eight races, including the men's senior race, and its men's and women's golden crews finished the season undefeated.

Randy Sandborn, along with 'Alapa Hoe's Daniel Sanford, were both voted Coach of the Year by their peers.

"I'm glad Sanford got it," Sanborn said. "He has a small club and he did a good job with them this season."

Sanford, whose club paddles in the AA division for smaller crews, was overwhelmed and excited by the unexpected award.

"It's an honor getting the recognition from the guys I looked up to," he said.

Lokahi, which had paddled in the AAA division the entire season, dropped down to the AA division and won it with 49 points.

The Waikiki Beach Boys completed an undefeated season and defended their A division title with 37 points. Its women's freshmen and mixed open 6 crews also finished the season undefeated.

Beach Boys paddler Sue Brown said her club has been successful this season by working as a team.

"(We) keep our heads in the game, have a goal and work together towards that goal rather than as individuals," she said.
