Australia's Mitchell wins paddleboard race

Jamie Mitchell of Australia won the Hennessey's International Paddleboard Championship for the third year in a row yesterday.
Mitchell finished the 6.5-mile course from Turtle Bay to Waimea Bay in 1 hour, 3 minutes, 6 seconds. He won $1,150 of the $10,000 purse, beating a field of 132 paddlers from around the world.
Jackson English (1:04:06) and Mick Dibetta (1:04:08) completed an Australian sweep of the top three finishers.
Brian Rocheleau was the top Hawai'i finisher, placing seventh with a time of 1:05:47.
The first 18 finishers were riding "unlimited" class boards, which range in length from 16 feet to 18 feet.
Hawai'i's Kanesa Duncan won the women's division in 1:17:59, followed by California's Jane Cairns (1:20:35) and Japan's Chitose Iwanami (1:21:25).
Australia's Tim Foran won the stock overall division (12-foot boards) in 1:10:02, followed by Hawai'i's Jimmy Austin (1:10:20) and Mathew Sack (1:10:28).
Paddleboards are streamlined surfboards designed to ride open ocean swells. They are powered only by arm strokes.
BASEBALL
Hilo loses in Big League regional
Anaheim scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Hilo, 10-3, yesterday in the Little League Big League (ages 16 to 18) Western Regional at San Bernardino, Calif.
Avery Kagawa's two-run homer put Hilo ahead 3-1 in the top of the fifth, but Anaheim tied it with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and went ahead for good the next inning.
Hilo will play Arizona today in an elimination game.
GOLF
Oride second at Junior Championships
Kelli Oride, of Lihu'e, Kaua'i, shot a 70 yesterday and was in second place in the girls' 10 to 11 division of the 2004 Optimist International Junior Golf Championships in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Oride, who trails Chirapat Jao-Javanil of Thailand by one stroke, was the top placer among Hawai'i golfers in six divisions after the opening round at the PGA National Resort & Spa Course.
VOLLEYBALL
Germany topples U.S. in World Grand Prix
Angelina Grun scored a match-high 21 points as Germany clinched the final spot in the World Grand Prix championship round with a 3-2 win over the USA women's national volleyball team last night at Rostock, Germany.
Grun had 16 kills, three blocks and two aces in the 25-23, 21-25, 16-25, 25-17, 15-12 win as Germany finished the preliminary round with a record of 5-4 to edge Russia in the six-team final round.
Tayyiba Haneef had a team-high 17 points to lead four players in double figures for the United States, which finished pool play with a record of 6-3 and in fourth place overall behind Brazil (9-0), Cuba (8-1) and China (7-2). Former Hawai'i All-American had 12 points for the U.S.
Italy, which earns a spot in the final round as the host team, finished fifth in the standings at 6-3.
MEETING
Ex-Rainbow star Collins at QB Club
Deitre Collins, a former University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball standout, will speak at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.
Collins, a former All-American and Olympian, currently is coach at Cornell University.
Also scheduled to speak are UH quarterbacks coach Dan Morrison and Todd Apo, a former Kamehameha multi-sport athlete and current basketball referee.
Lunch at the Pagoda Hotel ballroom begins at 11:30 a.m., with the program to follow at noon.
