Hilo advances to baseball title game

Hilo beat Arizona, 10-9, yesterday to advance to the championship game at the Little League Big League Western Regional at San Bernardino, Calif.

Hilo will face Southern California today in the title game of the tournament for 16- to 18-year-olds. If Hilo wins today, another game will be played tomorrow, with the winner advancing to the World Series at Easley, S.C., on Aug. 2 to 7.

Mason Suga had five RBIs for Hilo, including a three-run home run. Avery Kagawa also homered for Hilo.

Hilo rallied from an 8-7 deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning to go ahead 10-7.

Owen Otsuka led off with a single to center field and Kagawa followed with an infield hit. Both runners advanced on a passed ball and Suga followed with a two-run single to make it 9-8. Kulea Bondallian followed with his second hit of the game to score Suga for a 10-8 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Arizona scored once on a solo home run before being shut down.


FOOTBALL

Maui wins Tsunami Bowl crown, 36-20

Quarterback Lance DeSilva passed for four touchdowns to lead Maui to a 36-20 win over Kaua'i on Saturday in Tsunami Bowl XII at War Memorial Stadium at Maui.

DeSilva was named the game's MVP. Christian Hett had an interception and rushed for a touchdown for Maui.

Maui, which led the Hawai'i Football League standings in the regular season, ends the season with a 9-1 mark, while Kaua'i finishes at 5-5.


GOLF

Fujikawa in third at Junior Championships

Tadd Fujikawa shot a 65 yesterday to vault into third place in the boys' 12 to 13 division of the 2004 Optimist International Junior Golf Championships at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Fujikawa, who opened with a 71, had the lowest score of the 10 golfers yesterday. The Honolulu resident is three shots off the lead, held by Phillip Chol (133).

Kelli Oride, of Lihu'e, Kaua'i, shot an 83 yesterday to stand in fifth place in the girls' 10 to 11 division.

Oride, who shot a first-round 70, is at 153. Chirapat Jao-Javanil of Thailand leads the division at 136.

The tournament ends today.


BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Wong, Fonoimoana win AVP event

The ninth-seeded team of Eric Fonoimoana and Kevin Wong earned $20,000 by beating top-seeded Karch Kiraly and Mike Lambert. 22-20, 21-19. to win the AVP Hermosa Beach Open yesterday at Hermosa Beach, Calif.

Wong and Lambert are graduates of Punahou.

Sean Scott, another Punahou alum, and partner Todd Rogers lost to Kiraly and Lambert in the semifinals, 18-21, 23-21, 15-11.

Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs were declared winners by default in the women's division on Saturday after the top-seeded team of Misty May and Kerri Walsh was forced to withdraw due to May's recurring abdominal injury.


TENNIS

Chaminade signs two for 2004-05 season

The Chaminade women's tennis team has signed Summer Tantee from Gilbert, Ariz., and Haley Booker from Auburn, Calif., for the upcoming season, according to head coach Dennis Conroy.

Tantee is a returning student and a former two-year player for Cal-State Fullerton, where she was No. 1 in singles and doubles. Booker is an incoming freshman.

The team lost only one player from last season, Kim Yamasaki, who graduated in June.


Performance seminar at Central O'ahu courts

Sport Psychologist Roland Carlstedt will conduct a free Sports Performance Seminar Friday at the Central O'ahu Regional Park Tennis Complex, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

There will be a King/Queen of the Court competition following the seminar.

The Central O'ahu Regional Park Tennis Complex will also be the site of a Compass Draw Tournament on Saturday and Sunday.
