Drivers reminded of back-to-school traffic

As summer vacation draws to a close, the state Department of Transportation has launched its annual "Beat the School Jam" campaign to urge drivers to adjust their morning travel routines.
By a week from tomorrow, 63 percent of Hawai'i's public schools will be back in session, causing more congestion on neighborhood streets.
Then on Aug. 23, 42,000 university, community college, private and public school students will return to the classroom, increasing the amount of traffic on the highways.
"We want to remind motorists to expect additional traffic on our roadways," said DOT director Rod Haraga.
Drivers should avoid peak travel periods by leaving earlier or later in the morning, as well as making sure to maintain and inspect their vehicles to avoid becoming a road hazard, he said.
Haraga also reminded commuters, "This is a great time to use transportation alternatives, whether it's commuting by carpool, bus, van or walking."
According to a U.S. Census report, Hawai'i leads the nation in carpooling, with 19 percent of the working population sharing rides to work. Honolulu ranks in the top three metropolitan areas when it comes to carpooling.
Ridesharing allows motorists to take advantage of the high-occupancy vehicle and zipper lanes on the state highways.
The DOT also recommends other alternatives, such as biking, taking the city bus or signing students up for school bus service. • • • For more information on commuting options, contact: • TheBus at 848-5555 or www.thebus.org, to find out more about the city's public transportation service. • Vanpool Hawai'i at 596-8267 or www.vanpoolhawaii.com, to find out about how groups of four or more can get a state-owned van for their shared commute. • Leeward O'ahu Transportation Management Association at 677-RIDE or www.lotma.org for information about carpooling or riding a private bus from Central/Leeward O'ahu to downtown Honolulu and Waikiki. • DOT's traffic engineer at 692-7695 for more information about carpooling.
