One killed, two hurt as car hits pole in Kane'ohe

One man was killed and two others seriously injured when a car crashed into a utility pole yesterday afternoon in Kane'ohe.

The accident occurred at about 5:50 p.m. on Puohala Street near Kulauli Street. Police said the car may have been speeding.

A man in his 20s who was in the back seat of the car suffered head and neck injuries. He was taken to Castle Medical Center where he died.

The 17-year-old male who was driving the car and a 19-year-old male passenger were taken to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition.

The cause of the accident was under investigation.


Training site topic of meeting

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will hold a public meeting at 6 p.m. Aug. 4 at the Waiahole Elementary School cafeteria to discuss plans for the former Waikane military training area.

The contractor who will conduct the engineering evaluation and cost analysis will be introduced, the work plan reviewed and residents asked if a restoration advisory board for the project should be established.

Bus route gets more streets

The city is adding streets to bus Route 77, which serves Kane'ohe-Waimanalo. Beginning Aug. 23, Route 77 will include stops on Ilauhole, Lupe, Kauholokahiki and Nakini streets and Kalaniana'ole Highway.

"These changes were recommended by Council member Barbara Marshall and are meant to service the new Waimanalo kupuna housing facility," said Carol Costa, city spokeswoman.

Ka'aiai and Huli streets will continue to be served by Route 57 (Kailua-Ala Moana), but riders from these streets can get a transfer and board the Route 77 bus, Costa said.


BIG ISLAND

Body remains unidentified

HILO, Hawai'i — Police so far have been unable to identify a badly decomposed body found Saturday in the Fern Acres subdivision of Puna.

Detectives said they were unable to determine the gender of the clothed body found near a residence on Pikake Street. They said it could be a 46-year-old Puna man last seen June 13 in the area were the remains were found.

Police hope an autopsy and dental records will help determine the cause of death and the identity of the body.


NOAA to open office in Kona

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will open a Hawaiian Islands Whale National Marine Sanctuary office in Kailua, Kona, on the Big Island at 10 a.m. Thursday.

The new office, at 73-4460 Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway, will be headed by Justin Viezbicke, a marine conservation coordinator. The office space is being donated by the Natural Energy Lab of Hawai'i for two years.

A blessing and lei-cutting ceremony will be held, and U.S. Rep. Ed Case will speak at the opening.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources will administer the office.


EAST HONOLULU

Nextel plans to be discussed

Nextel will present its plans to upgrade its facilities at the Hawai'i Kai Golf Course at 7 p.m. today at the Hawai'i Kai Neighborhood Board meeting.

Also on tap is a discussion on supporting the East Honolulu Sustainable Communities Plan, a blueprint for building in Hawai'i Kai.

The meeting is at Haha'ione Elementary School cafeteria, 595 Pepe'ekeo St.
