Man, 21, held in theft of auto

A 21-year-old man was arrested for questioning in connection with an auto theft after police responded to a suspicious-circumstances call in Halawa about 9 a.m. yesterday and found two men sleeping in a car that had keys in the ignition and the motor running.

After confirming the car was stolen, police arrested the man found sleeping in the driver's seat.


Arrest follows road-rage report

A 23-year-old O'ahu woman may face a felony charge of entering a motor vehicle unlawfully after allegedly attacking a 44-year-old woman as she sat in her car on the Moanalua Freeway at about 6 p.m. yesterday.

The older woman told police that she was involved in a traffic incident with the younger woman, that a "road-rage type incident" ensued.

The younger woman caught up to her car, got out, reached into the older woman's car and struck her, the older woman told police.

Police officers responding to a call for help arrived and arrested the younger woman.


Man, 24, faces forgery charge

A man who allegedly tried to cash an $800 check made out to himself is facing a forgery charge.

Police said that a 63-year-old man on whose account the check was drawn said the check appeared to have been stolen while he was on a trip.

A 24-year-old man who tried to cash the check at a Kane'ohe bank was arrested about about 9:30 a.m. yesterday after bank workers became suspicious and called police.


Authorities name car-crash victim

A man who died after a car crash Monday afternoon on Puohala Road in Kane'ohe has been identified by the city medical examiner's office as 19-year-old Joseph R. Yoshioka of an Emepela Way address in Kane'ohe.

Traffic investigators have said that Yoshioka was riding in the back seat of a 2003 Dodge Neon sedan that was speeding on Puohala when it collided with a Toyota van and then struck a utility pole.


Injuries fatal to Kaua'i pedestrian

An 80-year-old Kaua'i man died yesterday after he was struck by a vehicle while trying to cross Kuhio Highway just before 2 p.m.

Police said Thomas Irwin of Lihu'e was attempting to walk across the highway in a crosswalk near Eha Road and Wilcox Hospital.

He was struck by a vehicle leaving the Isenburg subdivision, making a left turn from Eha Road onto the highway.

Irwin was taken to Wilcox Hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

There have been eight traffic deaths on Kaua'i so far this year, police said.
