QUICK BITES
Local wine store a cover story
Advertiser Staff
Lots of wine shops send out newsletters, but Vintage Wine Cellars has taken a more unusual approach to reaching customers: It has partnered with the national publisher of drinks magazine ("The Magazine of Fine Wine, Spirits and Living"), buying space for editorial material and the addition of its name above the magazine logo.
The summer issue, the magazine's second, includes seven pages of local content a message to readers from Vintage president Jay Kam, a three-page spread on premium sakes and the second in a series on local BYOB-friendly restaurants (Patisserie at Kahala Mall) and more. The rest of the magazine covers the international beverage scene.
The magazine is free in the Makiki shop and is sent to several thousand of the store's Connoisseur cardholders.
And now, an onion-eating contest
The festival, with entertainment, cooking demonstrations, a cooking competition, a popular onion-ring booth and other food sales, takes place 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 7 and 8 at the Whalers Village in Ka'anapali, Maui. Parking and admission are free. Information: (808) 661-4567 or whalersvil lage.com, click on "activities."
The Maui Onion Festival has a new layer in its 15th year: The International Federation of Competitive Eating (the ones who do the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating contest you've seen on TV) have sanctioned the onion-eating event at the festival and will be bringing one of their champions, 450-pound Eric "Badlands" Booker, to take on all challengers.
