Environmental efforts honored

The State Environmental Council has awarded its annual State Environmental Awards. The recipients are:

  • The state Department of Defense, for 28 field projects to recover endangered species and to eradicate noxious weeds.
  • The state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, for eradicating invasive plants, protecting endangered species and re-establishing the forest in degraded pastures.
  • The city Department of Transportation Services, for reducing dependence on the use of automobiles by establishing the Kapolei Transit Center, constructing 87 bus shelters and installing 300 benches at bus stops.
  • Kaua'i County's Office of Economic Development, for increasing energy efficiency and providing seed money for the Kaua'i Invasive Species Committee in efforts to eradicate invasive species.

Projects receive landscape awards

Fifteen private and professional landscapers and gardeners have been named winners of the 2004 Betty Crocker Landscape Awards, sponsored by Scenic Hawaii.

This year's award categories and winners were:

  • Professional landscaping — the Punahou Square public park; the Outrigger Canoe Club grounds; landscaping at The Queen's Medical Center; and Waterfront Plaza.
  • Private gardens — the David Cheever and Cliff Slater residences in Honolulu and the Nancy Walden residence in Manoa.
  • Community gardens — Friendship Garden in Kane'ohe; the Urban Garden Center in Pearl City; and the Leeward Health Center grounds on the Wai'anae Coast.
  • Xeriscape gardens — the groundskeeping crew at the Hale Koa Hotel in Waikiki; several gardens developed by volunteers at Leeward Community College; and the Pua Mau botanical garden on the Big Island.
