Kai propels U.S. to Nordic Cup final

University of Hawai'i forward Natasha Kai scored two goals yesterday to help the U.S. Under-21 Women's National Team advance to the championship game of the Nordic Cup, the age group's premier competition.

Kai, who leads the team with 12 goals, scored in the 56th and 78th minutes as the U.S. defeated Germany, 3-0, in Dalvik, Iceland.

The United States will face Sweden tomorrow for the championship, going for its unprecedented sixth straight Nordic Cup title and seventh in the past eight years since winning its first in 1997.

Iolani hires Lee to head boys program

Chris Lee, Iolani graduate and longtime assistant soccer coach, has been hired as boys varsity coach, Raiders athletic director Carl Schroers said.

"He's extremely knowledgeable, he knows the kids, he knows the school," Schroers said. "We're thrilled."

Lee, a 1988 graduate of Iolani, has helped out with the boys soccer program for the past 13 years.

Hawai'i girls lead Junior America's Cup

A team of four golfers from Hawai'i took the first-round lead at the Girls Junior America's Cup at the Royal Colwood Golf Club yesterday in Victoria, British Columbia.

Mari Chun led the Hawai'i team with a 3-under 71. Kayla Morinaga shot 72, Kimberly Kim 76 and Kelly Nakashima 81 for a 219 (best three scores) team total.

British Columbia and San Diego are tied for second at 222.

Amy Eneroth of Washington led with a 69.

The tournament features 72 junior girls, ages 17 and under, representing British Columbia, Alberta, Mexico and 15 Western U.S. states. The tournament ends tomorrow.



Toyama trails by seven shots in Junior Classic

Travis Toyama, of Kane'ohe, shot a 1-over-par 72 and was tied for ninth after the second round of the Independent Agent Junior Classic at Dornick Hills Country Club in Ardmore, Okla.

Toyama was at 3-over 145, seven strokes behind leader Kevin Tway of Edmond, Okla., who shot a 71 yesterday.

T.J. Kua, of Lihu'e, Kaua'i, was at 152 after a 77 yesterday.

Toyama is the defending champion of the tournament, which runs through tomorrow.



Sonnenberg wins Amatour battle

Eric Sonnenberg shot a final-round 2-over-par 74 on Sunday to hold off Ryan Perez for the Amatour Hawai'i's Kane'ohe Klipper Battle championship.

Sonnenberg finished at even-par 144, two strokes ahead of Perez (final-round 71) at Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course.

Kramer Aoki (76), John Bascuk (75), Gregg Omori (72) and Reyn Tanaka (73) tied at 148.



YOUTH BASEBALL

Pearl City captures state junior title

Alika Pruett pitched a four-hitter and batted 2 for 4 as Pearl City defeated 'Ewa, 12-3, yesterday in the Little League Junior (ages 13 and 14) state championship baseball game at Walter Victor Stadium in Hilo.

Kamuela Perry-Chong and John Abreu each contributed two hits and two RBIs for Pearl City, which pulled away with a six-run rally in the fifth inning.

Pearl City advances to the Western Regional in Tigard, Ore., Aug. 4 to 11.
