Maui motorcyclist dies in accident

A 33-year-old Maui man was killed yesterday when he lost control of his motorcycle while driving on Hana Highway near the 29.5 mile post in Hana.

Police said Randolph Akoi of Hana was pronounced dead at about 6:05 p.m. at Hana Medical Center. They said he was wearing a helmet and eye protection shen he crashed.

Investigators had not yet determined whether speed, alcohol or drug use were factors in the accident.

Maui County has recorded 10 traffic deaths so far this year, four of them in July, compared to 11 by this day last year.

Boy, 17, held in school burglary

Police were holding a 17-year-old boy as a suspect in a burglary at Maryknoll High School.

Officers responding to an alarm at about 3:30 a.m. today reported finding the boy in the school. He ran as officers approached but was caught moments later with school property in his possession.

Man suspected of striking officer

A 52-year-old man was being held today on charges of attacking a police officer who had been sent to help him.

The officer was responding to a call at about 2 a.m. today to help in an injured-person case at 2709 Kalakaua Ave. in Waikiki. The officer said he was punched in the face without provocation.

Woman reports attack in Kahala

A 22-year-old woman told police that another woman of about the same age beat her with a shoe at Wai'alae Beach Park around 11:30 last night.

She said she and the other woman had caught a cab from Waikiki to the park, where an argument took place.

After the beating, the assailant took some of her property and fled, the woman told police. She was later taken to a hospital in serious condition.

Honaunau home damaged in fire

A fire damaged a one-story home in a remote area of Honaunau on the Big Island at about 2:30 yesterday afternoon.

It took 10 firefighters about 20 minutes to bring the blaze at the home on Painted Church Road under control. Access was limited to four-wheel drive vehicles.
