ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Getting the spoof scoop on the Democratic shindig

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Jon Stewart and his "Indecision 2004" crew are in Boston.

Comedy Central

Ah, just what we need: A little straight news with a hint — OK, an overdose — of "The Daily Show" satire. The spoof show offers a 30-minute break from the network coverage of the Democratic National Convention with Comedy Central's "Indecision 2004."

Jon Stewart and company are in Boston for their "special report" this week, airing at 4 p.m. daily and again at 8 and 10 p.m.

The XL-Files: The truth is out there

Better hold on to those "fat" clothes and make sure you're settled into the low-carb lifestyle before buying a new wardrobe. The British Dietetic Association recently released information from a survey of 4,000 people to assess the success of the average dieter. It's not pretty. A sampling:

  • Nearly 50 percent found dieting too difficult and quit.
  • Only 20 percent reached their target weight.
  • Thirty-three percent said they ended up heavier than their original weight just weeks after their diet ended.
  • Twenty percent of those who gained weight after the diet ended gained more than 14 pounds.
  • Nearly 40 percent of women ended up being heavier than they were when they started dieting, compared with 20 percent of men.

FINAL WORD

Lance Henriksen
Star of the upcoming "Alien vs. Predator," commenting on Comic-Con International, a sci-fi gathering in San Diego last weekend

"There are 80,000 people who are going to pass through here, and there are only 35,000 at the Democratic convention. What does that tell you?"
