UH football reinstates Eaton, Bass

By Stephen Tsai

The University of Hawai'i will allow offensive lineman Brandon Eaton and running back Michael Bass to compete for the Warriors this coming football season.

The players faced a semester-long suspension for their involvement in a dorimtory fight in February.

But the Office of the Dean of Students for the Manoa campus decided to place Eaton and Bass on probation for the fall semester. They received their notifications yesterday.

The probation requires both players to work community service. They will be allowed to attend classes, remain on football scholarship and play for the Warriors.

Because both players live off campus, their dormitory status was not an issue.

"I'm very happy," said Eaton, a fourth-year junior who is projected to start at right tacke. "I always knew the truth would come out. I can't get into the details, but I'm happy about the way things turned out."

Bass, a senior, was not immediately available for comment.

"I'm glad this has been resolved," UH coach June Jones said.

The Warriors will begin three weeks of training camp Aug. 9. "We can focus on that," Eaton said. "Not that we weren't focused on football. But this thing was always a distraction in the back of our minds. Now we can move on."

The UH Code of Conduct requires disciplinary action for students who are involved in fights. Although police were called to the February fight, no arrest or complaint was made.

Meanwhile, Jones is awaiting an update on starting running back West Keli'ikipi. In May, Keli'ikipi was charged as part of a scheme to defraud money from a medical-insurance fund. Citing the Code of Conduct, UH athletic director Herman Frazier then suspended Keli'ikipi from football competition.

Frazier had wanted to resolve the matter by yesterday. "Things couldn't get done in time," Jones said. "We'll just have to wait for the next three or four days."

While on suspension, Keli'ikipi is allowed to attend classes and receive a football scholarship.
