'Ukulele master is from Canada

Canadian 'ukulele master James Hill, in town for last Sunday's 'Ukulele Festival, will give a solo concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Atherton Performing Arts Studio. Hill, who began studying music at age 3, hails from Langley, British Columbia. At 23 years old, he has performed as a soloist in North America and Japan and shared billing with other top 'ukulele players including Ohta-san, Jake Shimabukuro and Kelly Boy DeLima. 'Home' to celebrate

It's an Island-music kind of evening as Rip Tide Records celebrates Pono's debut CD, "Home of Mine," at a release party Sunday. The harmonious melodies of band members Kaleo Phillips, Joshua Kahula and Pi'ilani Arias will fill the night air; also joining in on the festivities will be Sani and Christian, Maunalua, Ho'okena and Kawai Cockett. The party happens 5-10 p.m. at Gordon Biersch in the Aloha Tower Marketplace. 599-4877.

A musical tale in the rain forest

The summer's about to be a bit more sensational as the Movement Center prepares its sixth annual Summer Sensations showcase, "The Bare Necessities," this weekend. This Hawaiian-style adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's beloved "Jungle Book" features a little girl who gets lost in the rain forest and is then befriended by colorful creatures. The play is at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Mamiya Theater, Saint Louis campus. Tickets are $17-$30.

A lu'au from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday features food from Sam Choy's at $15 a plate. A dessert party after the evening show is at 9 p.m.; included in ticket price. Before the Sunday matinee, barbecue from Sam Choy's will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at $8 per plate. 735-8641.

ARTafterDark returns

ARTafterDARK continues to entice the young-professional crowds to the Honolulu Academy of Arts with tonight's theme of "Emerging Artists and Young Collectors Night." From 5 to 9 p.m., the monthly pau-hana event features ZIP tours through the exhibition "Artists of Hawai'i 2004," question-and-answer sessions with local artists, collectors and art consultants and a painting demonstration by Mark Brown. The Ned Flanders Quintet provides jazz entertainment, while Michael Tannenbaum plays slack-key guitar in the central court. Admission is $7 or free for museum members. 532-6091.

Gamelan concert Saturday

The Living Heritage 2004 series continues Saturday with a free concert of Javanese gamelan music on the 'Iolani Palace grounds. Sponsored by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts' Folk Arts Program and the Friends of 'Iolani Palace, the event features a gamelan ensemble, an Indonesian instrumental group composed of gongs, drums, wind and string instruments. The program showcases the University of Hawai'i Gamelan Ensemble under the direction of founder Hardja Susilo, along with Javanese dance by Matt Dunn and demonstration on the basics of gamelan sound. Head for Kapolei for the farm fair

Kapolei is the place to be this weekend and next as the 2004 Hawaii State Farm Fair sets up camp at the Kapolei Fairgrounds, on the corner of Fort Barrette Road and Farrington Highway. The fair offers the Hawai'i agriculture experience, demonstrations, samplings, country market, livestock and exhibit, Meadow Gold petting zoo, orchid and plant show, EK Fernandez midway of rides and games and food booths, all the while raising money for the Oahu County Farm Bureau. Fair times are 6 p.m.-midnight Thursdays-Fridays and noon-midnight Saturdays-Sundays, tonight through Aug. 8. Admission is $3 general, $2 children 4-11 and free for those 3 and younger. Slam team heading for St. Louis

Here's an update for all you slam fans: The HawaiiSlam Team, above, is getting ready to compete at the National Poetry Slam in St. Louis next week. Commonly referred to as the "Super Bowl" of slam poetry, HawaiiSlam will go up against teams from Chicago, St. Louis and Providence. R.I., in the preliminary rounds. Meanwhile, the First Thursdays poetry slam at Studio 1 continues, with doors opening at 7 p.m. and show starting at 8 Thursday. HawaiianRyan takes over Kealoha's hosting duties this time around, with additional entertainment including a capoeira showcase by Capoeira Senzala, DJ Marloca of Sisters in Sound, live painters and visual projections. Cover is $3 before 8 p.m. and $5 after. 387-9664.

Come on, kids, it's your day

Kids across the nation are encouraged to come out from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday and celebrate National Kids Day Picnic in the Park. Kaka'ako Waterfront Park will be the Hawai'i stage for the second year of this event, which encourages parents and children to spend quality time together. The Boys and Girls Club of Hawaii and the Children's Discovery Center have teamed up to bring the event to Honolulu. Merriment includes arts and crafts booths, keiki ID, games, entertainment and a Papa John's parent/child pizza-eating contest. Admission is free. 524-5437.

All about those nuptials

Brides- (and grooms!) to-be can get all their wedding questions answered in one place at this weekend's 16th annual Hawaii Bridal Expo. The Blaisdell Exhibition Hall will host more than 225 exhibits offering materials on everything from wedding apparel, limousines, caterers, invitations, flower arrangements, photography and jewelry stores. A fashion show also takes place each day, at 7:30 p.m. today and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Expo times are 6-10 p.m. today, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday.
