Television show explores how Hawai'i deals with sharks
The story of how Hawai'i copes with deadly tiger sharks will be told in "Tiger Shark Attack: Beyond Fear" at noon Sunday during the Discovery Channel's "Shark Week."
The show, produced by the BBC Natural History Unit, focuses on the fatal mauling of Martha Morrell off Olowalu, Maui, in 1991 and the aftermath of the tragedy, which included a state-sanctioned hunt for sharks. The show chronicles how attitudes and research have evolved over the years, and includes interviews with Hawai'i experts such as Hawaiian cultural specialist Charles Kauluwehi Maxwell Sr., who opposed the shark hunt for cultural reasons.
