Chun leads Hawai'i to third in Cup golf

Kamehameha senior Mari Chun earned medalist honors after shooting a final-round 5-under 69 to lead Hawai'i to a third-place tie yesterday at the Girls Junior America's Cup at the Royal Colwood Golf Club in Victoria, British Columbia.

Chun finished at 8-under 214, two strokes ahead of Washington's Amy Eneroth, who shot 72 yesterday.

Southern California won the team title with a 663 total. Northern California was second at 669, followed by Hawai'i and San Diego at 670.

Other Hawai'i golfers were Kimberly Kim (78—231), Kayla Morinaga, (77—234) and Kelly Nakashima (75—235).

Mexico won the boys title with a 654 total at the San Joaquin Country Club in Fresno, Calif., yesterday.

Northern California was second at 655 and Hawai'i (Allan Baab, Cory French, Sean Maekawa, Jacob Lowe) was third with a 656. Individual scores were not available.



ELSEWHERE

Junior Classic: Kane'ohe's Travis Toyama shot a 1-under-par 69 yesterday and finished eighth at the Independent Insurance Agent Junior Classic at Dornick Hills Country Club in Ardmore, Okla. Toyama finished at 12-over 292. T.J. Kua, of Lihu'e, Kaua'i, finished at 84—318.

Optimist Junior: Honolulu's Ayaka Kaneko shot a 73 to take a three-stroke lead after the first round in the girls 16-18 age division of the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.



BASEBALL

Hawai'i Babe Ruth team beats Utah, 19-0

Dustin Uchiyama and Casey Chong combined on a three-hitter as Hawai'i routed Bingham, Utah, 19-0, yesterday in the Babe Ruth Southwest Regional for 13-year-olds at Salt Lake City, Utah.

Scott Talaesea hit two homers for Hawai'i.
