The Rev. Francis A. Marzen, editor of the Hawai'i Catholic Herald for more than 20 years, died July 19 at Castle Medical Center in Kane'ohe. He was 79.

Marzen was born March 14, 1925, in East Mauch Chunk, Pa., and attended the Pontifical College Josephinum in Worthington, Ohio.

In May 1951, Marzen was ordained a priest and two months later he arrived in Hawai'i. He served as assistant pastor at various churches and was the founding pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel in Pearl City and Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Honolulu.

Marzen began his work for the Catholic Herald as a writer soon after he arrived in Hawai'i and served as its editor from 1961 to 1982. Marzen retired in 1986 and worked for the city as an information specialist.

He is survived by brothers, Joseph and Charles; and sister, Rosemarie Smith.

Visitation will be 8:30 to 10 a.m. Aug. 6 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church; Mass at 10 a.m. Graveside services at noon at Hawaiian Memorial Park.
