Honolulu's Kaneko loses lead in Jr. golf

Honolulu's Ayaka Kaneko shot a 5-over-par 77 yesterday and fell into a second-place tie in the girls' 16-18 age division after two rounds of the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships at PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Kaneko, the first-round leader, is tied with Selanee Henderson, of California, and Preawnapa Phol-Uayporn, of Bangkok, Thailand, at 150. They trail Juliana Beatriz Murcia Ortiz, of Bogota, Colombia, who shot a 68 for 146.

Xyra Suyetsugu, also of Honolulu, shot 76 yesterday, and moved into a five-way tie for 10th place at 157.

After today's third round, the top 35 players and ties will qualify for tomorrow's final round.

BASEBALL

Pearl City cruises in Senior regional, 17-2

Shannon Liu scattered four hits and drove in three runs to lead Pearl City past Oregon, 17-2, yesterday in the first round of the Little League Senior Division (14-16) Western Regional at Missoula, Mont.

Liu, aided by 16 hits, earned the win while also hitting 4-for-4 at the plate.

Jason Rasa had five RBIs, including three on a double in the first inning as Pearl City jumped out to a 4-0 lead.

Oregon answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, but a two-run homer by Casey Fujishige in the second extended Pearl City's lead to 6-2.

Pearl City added eight more runs, with five in the fourth inning.

Pearl City plays Alaska today in the double-elimination tournament.

BYUH's Smith wins marathon in Utah

Brigham Young-Hawai'i cross country runner Chelsea Smith won the Deseret Morning News/KJZZ TV women's marathon on Saturday at Salt Lake City, Utah.

Smith, completing her first marathon, finished in 2 hours, 49 minutes, 4 seconds, ahead of Julie Thomas of Holladay, Utah, who finished in 2:50:39.7.

Smith, the defending NCAA Division II cross country champion, previously entered the Ogden Marathon, but didn't finish.

VOLLEYBALL

Tryouts for UH-Hilo women's team Aug. 10

The University of Hawai'i-Hilo women's volleyball team will hold tryouts at 7 a.m., Aug. 10, at UH-Hilo gym.

Participants must be full-time returning students or incoming students who have been accepted to UH-Hilo.
