Advertiser Staff

Mike Trapasso was named the Western Athletic Conference baseball coach of the year and two players, outfielder Greg Kish and pitcher Ricky Bauer, were named to the first team, the conference office announced today.

Trapasso said the coaching award "shows what we've done as a team and as a coaching staff is being recognized."

Balloting was by the conference coaches.

Four Rainbows were named to the second team: first baseman Andrew Sansaver, second baseman Isaac Omura and pitchers Stephen Bryant and Darrell Fisherbaugh.

Trapasso, in his third year at UH, led the Rainbows to the second-best overall record at 31-24, and a fourth-place WAC finish at 13-16. "I'm very appreciative (of the honor)," Trapasso said. "It shows what we've done as a team and as a coaching staff is being recognized."

It as the first time in 14 years UH has had a conference coach of the year. Les Murakami won it in 1991.

Fresno outfielder Richie Robnett was named player of the year and Rice pitcher Wade Townsend pitcher of the year. Rice second baseman Josh Rodriguez was selected freshman of the year.

Conference champion Rice had four first-team selections, as did third-place Fresno State.
