Pearl Ridge Elementary tops recycling challenge

Pearl Ridge Elementary School took first place in the large school category during the state's 20th annual School Recycling Challenge by collecting 289 aluminum cans per student during the school year.

Pearl City Highlands Elementary took first place in the medium school category (391cans per student) and Messiah Lutheran (247 cans per student) took top honors in the small school division.

Students statewide collected 1.4 million aluminum cans during the program, which runs from September to April each year.

Schools are paid for the cans, and winning schools earn cash prizes ranging from $100 to $200 and plaques made from recycled glass.

Individual students won food coupons and school supplies from Domino's Pizza and K-Mart.

Other winning schools include Moanalua Elementary (122 cans per student, second place, large category); Mililani Mauka Elementary (84 cans per students, third place, large category); Manoa Elementary (186 cans per student, second place, medium category); Waikiki Elementary (126 cans per student, third place, medium category); Wailupe Valley School (212 cans per student, second place, small category); and Sunset Beach Christian School (119 cans per student, third place, small category).

Top recyclers on the Neighbor Islands include Kua O Ka La Public Charter School (865 cans per student), Honaunau School (150 cans per student), Kealakehe Elementary (45 cans per student), St. Catherine Catholic School (148 cans per student), Koloa School (50 cans per student) and St. Theresa School (692 cans per student).
