QUICK BITES
You be the judge

By Wanda A. Adams

It's not exactly "American Idol," but O'ahu eaters will get a chance to vote with their forks in the Kaukau Challenge at the Mai Tai Bar in Ala Moana Center, beginning Monday and continuing through June 27. Contestants submitted recipes of which 21 were chosen to be served in the restaurant. On Finals Night, July 11, there will be cooking exhibitions and a judging by culinary professionals and celebrities.

First week is soups and salads, second week pupu and entrees, third week desserts. Dishes range from tempura shrimp and tofu salad to banana lumpia with strawberry cream cheese. Ronald McDonald House gets 10 percent of all Kaukau specials sold. The winners will share more than $10,000 in prizes, including a trip to Napa Valley with a private tour and tasting at Beaulieu Vineyards and other gifts. Information: www.kaukauchallenge.com.

Wines and sticks

Two culinary events are worth marking your calendar for. On Aug. 1, Tedeschi Vineyards on Maui is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a Harvest Festival on the grounds in Ulupalakua.

It'll release new varietal wines — syrah and chenin blanc — and a limited bottling of anniversary wine. Information: mauiwine.com.

And the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce's popular Chopsticks & Wine event is set for Oct. 13 at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. The $75 ticket includes tastings from various restaurants, as well as wine, beer and sake. Reservations: 949-5531.

Shrek-o-rama snacks

Parents, prepare yourselves for battles in the supermarket aisle. General Mills, which has a promotional deal with the makers of the "Shrek 2" flick, has released not just the usual move tie-in cereal but an entire kingdom full of products with Shrek themes, including green popcorn under the Pop Secret brand, fruit snacks in the shape of the movie's characters and chartreuse-frosted Shrek Toaster Snacks.

The work dreck comes to mind.
