USS Chung-Hoon bound for Pearl

A guided-missile destroyer named for a Honolulu man and World War II hero, The USS Chung-Hoon, will be commissioned Sept. 18 at Pearl Harbor, where it will be home-ported.

Rear Adm. Gordon Paiea Chung-Hoon, who was born in Honolulu in 1910 and died in 1979, received the Navy Cross and Silver Star "for conspicuous gallantry and extraordinary heroism" as commanding officer of the destroyer Sigsbee.

Chung-Hoon, who attended the U.S. Naval Academy and graduated in May 1934, received the awards for his courage and leadership following a kamikaze attack on the Sigsbee in 1945. Chung-Hoon was a commander at the time.

The Chung-Hoon, christened in 2003 in Pascagoula, Miss., is expected to bring 22 officers, 293 enlisted people, and $17 million in salaries to Hawai'i.
