Rainbow Wahine in for challenge

Advertiser Staff

Nine NCAA Tournament teams highlight the 2004 University of Hawai'i women's volleyball schedule.

Setter Kanoe Kamana'o, the AVCA National Freshman of the Year, is the lone returning starter from a UH team that advanced to the final four with the help of seven seniors.

Hawai'i opens the season against Eastern Washington in the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic on Sept. 2. Arizona and San Diego, both of which played in last year's NCAA Tournament, complete the classic field. Hawai'i then hosts three NCAA Tournament teams in UCLA, Southwest Missouri State and Santa Clara in the Aston Imua Wahine Volleyball Challenge from Sept. 9 to 11.

Hawai'i wraps up its September homestand against three more NCAA Tournament teams — playing California and UC Irvine in the Sprint Hawai'i Invitational, then meeting Pepperdine on Sept. 24 and 25.

The Rainbow Wahine open the Western Athletic Conference season on Sept. 30 at Fresno State. The conference season runs through November and concludes with the WAC Tournament, scheduled for Nov. 19 to 21 at Reno, Nev. Hawai'i then plays two matches at Utah State and Utah before Thanksgiving. Utah appeared in last year's NCAA Tournament.

NCAA Tournament play begins Dec. 2 with first- and second-round matches. The NCAA Championships are scheduled for Dec. 16 and 18 in Long Beach, Calif.
