Libraries offer gifts for summer readers

Children can sign up for the free summer reading program at any of the state's 50 public libraries.

The program — with the theme "Readiculous!" — will be offered at the libraries from June 14 to July 17. It is aimed at children from preschool to sixth grade.

Children will receive incentives for reading at least one book a week. Adults may read aloud to children from preschool to second grade.

Libraries are also holding a reading program for young adults at the same time, called "Teens Rock @ Your Library." Recording artist Darrell Labrado, from Moloka'i, will perform at select libraries, and teens are eligible to enter a sweepstakes for shopping sprees of up to $1,000 at Pearlridge Center.

Young people who read at least one book a week are also eligible for incentives from corporate sponsors.

Science, math, art sessions at LCC

Young people can take math, science and art classes at Leeward Community College this summer.

The 2004 SMARTS Academy will run from June 14 to July 23 in three, two-week sessions. Half-day programs are $100 per session, while full-day programs are $180 per session.

Children from 6 to 17 are eligible. Parents can attend the classes with their children. For more information, call 455-0477.
