Kaua'i's Andy Irons remained the No. 1 ranked surfer in the world after placing second in the Quiksilver Pro yesterday.

The final day of the contest was completed in clean 6- to 8-foot waves at "Cloudbreak" off Tavarua, Fiji.

Irons won three heats yesterday, but was then defeated by Florida's Damien Hobgood in the final. Hobgood was nearly perfect in the final, receiving scores of 10 and 9.9 for his best two waves. Irons' top two waves received scores of 9.63 and 9.33.

Through four of 12 events on the 2004 World Championship Tour, Irons has 3,816 points. C.J. Hobgood — Damien's twin brother — is No. 2 with 2,964 points.

Fred Patacchia Jr. of O'ahu's North Shore was eliminated in the quarterfinals; Sunny Garcia of Wai'anae was eliminated in the fourth round.
