C&K's 'Lifetime Party' is quite a bash

Cecilio and Kapono have condensed three decades of their music into a concert DVD showcasing 13 of their songs.

While this milestone concert, recorded last year at Kapono's at Aloha Tower Marketplace, seems modest and insignificant considering the scope of their earlier shows, it does magnify and update through 13 tunes the breadth and substance of the duo's style, stamina and ability to connect with an audience.
Surely, if you're a serious music buff, you've linked with C&K somewhere, some time in the past. They've been partners through most of their tenure, though each has gone separate ways periodically, only to hold periodic "reunion" concerts, almost as if realignment meant a chance to replenish the moolah in the bank.
No matter.
Cecilio & Kapono's 'Lifetime Party 30 Years of Friends' release party

Mostly, it's all about their music. Haven't you ever lip-synched your way through such hits as "Friends," "About You," "Goodnight and Good Morning," "All Is Fair," "Sailing" and "Sunshine Love"? Perhaps had one special tune of theirs that you call "your" song?
It's all about reflection and recollection here. Friends revisiting friends. Exchanging memories. Remembering when.
Cec and Kapono allow their fans to participate, too, notably on "Danny's Song," a sing-along challenging men vs. women to out-sing each other.
The concert assembles a stellar four-member backup group to augment C&K's guitars (and Cec's infrequent harmonica). Clearly, drummer Rick Gilbert, bassist James Roberts, keyboardist Mark Tanouye and percussionist Lopaka Col?n add electricity and energy in the duo's sound.
It's nice to encounter a fresh rendering (a hipper arrangement and vigor in vocals) on "Sunshine Love," and revisit the zydeco rhythms (thanks to Colón) on "Lifetime Party."
It's joyous, too, to savor the beguiling, confident, engaging smile of Kapono, and even the quirky humor of Cec. And yes, they still have pipes that pour out that melodious signature sound.
The DVD boasts a number of extras vintage photographs, lyrics to the 13 tunes, two concert versions (one with factoids inserted between some songs, one without) and a cinema verit? sequence where C&K and band members hang out and kibitz.
What would have been great: some historic live-in-concert footage from the Shell or the Stadium gigs.
Still, who's to argue? "Lifetime Party" is a keeper, which brings visuals to the earlier-released CD version of their anniversary concert the one that just won a Na Hoku Hanohano Award.
Here's to the next 30 years presuming there's promise for more fruitful fare and vibrations. To quote a line from the closing song, "Goodtime Together," "the best is yet to come."
