Local favorite: King Kamehameha parade

Circle June 12 on the calendar for the 88th annual King Kamehameha Celebration Floral Parade.Vibrant floral floats, statuesque pa'u riders and precise marching bands always highlight this colorful treat. This year's theme is "Na Mo'olelo O Kamehameha I," or "Legends of Kamehameha the Great." It starts at 9:30 a.m. and winds from King and Richards streets to Kapi'olani Park. Call 586-0333.


CONCERT: June 17

Get in a "Mellow Mood" when punk pop band Slightly Stoopid, right, rocks into town. Hailing from Southern California, the band burst upon the scene in the late '90s and have kept crowds moving ever since. No doubt, these guys have "Everything You Need." Tickets: $15.

FESTIVAL: June 25-27

Are you hungering for a lip-smacking, tummy-rubbing good time? Then get ready for the delicious offerings of the 13th annual Taste of Honolulu food festival. On the menu: Goodies from top local restaurants, music from two entertainment stages, chefs demonstrating cooking techniques, premiere wines at the wine-tasting center. And there's family fun at the Weinberg Family Center. Admission is $3 general and free for seniors and children 12 and younger. Scrip will be sold for tasting portions.

DANCE: June 26-27

Kumu hula Noenoelani Zuttermeister and her hula halau present "Under a Tropic Moon: 100 Years of Hapa Haole Hula." The concert takes a look at hapa haole hula throughout the years, including the boat days era, movies period and classics. Proceeds from this benefit concert will establish a perpetual scholarship at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's College of Engineering, in memory of Thomas Keola Ahsing, who was once a student of Zuttermeister. Tickets are $37 general and $32 seniors.

CONCERT: July 3

This Fourth of July weekend, the fireworks start going off early with jazz pop band Spyro Gyra in the house. The group appears at the third annual Guitars Under the Stars event, along with local jazz star Sonya Mendez performing with the Brian Kessler Band. Besides the music, enjoy food and beverage stations, telescopes for star-gazing and a dazzling fireworks display at the end of the night. Tickets are $30 advance or $35 at the door.

CONCERT: June 19

The intensity is rising, the beats are pounding, which can only mean one thing: The Planet of the Drums Tour is about to drop in Honolulu. This hot drum-n-bass music festival features the jungle beats of Dieselboy, breakbeat sounds of AK 1200, electronica grooves of DJ Dara along with MC J-Messinian. Presale tickets are $15, for 16 and older. At the door, tickets are $20.

MIXED BAG: June 20

Spend time with your furry (or feathered) friend and raise money for a good cause at the same time during the Hawaiian Humane Society's Petwalk 2004, right. Pet or no pet, come out to support this pledge-based fund-raiser for the society's programs and services. Drop off pledges at 7 a.m. before taking on the two-mile course at 8 a.m. The fun includes a mini-course for short-legged pets, pet costume and tail-wagging contests, and refreshments for all.

FESTIVAL: July 2-4

BayFest 2004 prepares for another booming good time over the Fourth of July weekend with stellar entertainment, military displays and dazzling nightly fireworks shows. This year's featured entertainment includes singer/songwriter Liz Phair, left, July 2, mellow rockers Train July 3 and country star Jo Dee Messina July 4. The weekend's excitement also includes an Island Lifestyle Expo, fitness challenges, water sports, car shows, carnival rides and games. No backpacks or coolers allowed. Ticket details to be announced.
