Pumping Irons

Kaua'i-based pro surfer Andy Irons, two-time defending world champion, is buff on the cover of the May edition of Outside magazine, emerging from the water off Turtle Bay Resort. This photo and others within illustrate "The Secrets of Perfect Shape," a story by Outside fitness editor Paul Scott about conditioning routines tailored to specific purposes (endurance, speed, explosive power, etc.).

"Going out every day is one of the best ways to stay motivated," says Irons, who talks about having to dig deep and overpower the temptation to let up or skip a workout. "Sometimes you've simply got to think it, will it and do it. Push on through and persevere." The magazine is on newsstands, or see www.outsidemag.com (you can see magazine content for free if you become an Outside Away member).

Fetlocks and furlongs

While you're waiting to see if Smarty Jones can complete the Triple Crown tomorrow with a win at the Belmont Stakes (11:30 a.m., NBC), tonight is a good time to check out these primers:

• "Hidalgo" at the dollar theaters. Especially if a sand-soaked Viggo Mortensen tickles your tailfeathers.

• Rent "Seabiscuit" (pictured), the 2003 Oscar contender.

• From the oldies pile: "National Velvet" or "Black Beauty."

Skin-diver showcase

Spearfishing and free-diving enthusiasts step into the spotlight tonight with the debut of "Hawaiian Skin Diver," a monthly show highlighting exotic locations. Locally produced, the half-hour segment airs at 9 p.m. on OC16.

"There's no place better than Hawai'i to originate a dive show," said Kyle Nakamoto of Red Sea Ocean Adventures, the producer. The first episode features a trip to Ni'ihau and look at Jay Riffe, who set three world records with his handcrafted spearguns. The show repeats at 5 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. tomorrow, 10:30 p.m. Sunday, and 6:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Monday.
