Hawai'i coed sailors take lead at dinghy nationals

The University of Hawai'i coed sailing team leads after two days of the ICSA Dinghy Intercollegiate Championships at Cascade Locks, Ore.

The Rainbows have 122 points, Georgetown is second with 156 and St. Mary's third with 162.

Hawai'i's A division team of Bryan Lake and Jennifer Warnock sits atop the division with 67 points.

In the B division, Hawai'i's Joey Pasquali, Matt Stine, Carly Allen, Cassandra Harris and Jeffrey Boyd lead with 55 points.

The regatta concludes today.



BYU-HAWAI'I

• Two in running for women's athlete of year: Brigham Young University-Hawai'i athletes Chelsea Smith (cross country) and Adrienn Hegedus (tennis) have been nominated for the 2003-04 NCAA II Collegiate Women's Athlete of the Year.

The winner will be announced June 21 at Columbia University in New York City.

Smith, a sophomore and former walk-on, won the NCAA II individual cross country championship last fall.

Hegedus led the Seasiders to a third consecutive NCAA II national championship. She went 22-0 in singles and 23-0 in doubles, with an overall record of 101-0.



BASEBALL

Leilehua star signs with HPU: Leilehua's Spencer Omalza, the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division Player of the Year, signed with the Hawai'i Pacific University baseball team, highlighting a group of five players for the 2005 season.

Joining Omalza are two other local players and two transfers from Mount San Jacinto Junior College in California.

Omalza, a two-time OIA Western Division All-Star, is a shortstop and pitcher. He batted .500 in the regular season and went 4-1 as a pitcher.

Another OIA Western Division All-Star, left-handed pitcher Tony Ganigan, and pitcher Pierce Magallan of Mililani High School will also join the Sea Warriors.

Left-handed pitcher Josh Guerra (6-1, 190) and outfielder Ryan Duncan (6-2, 200) from Mount San Jacinto JC round out the recruiting class for this period.

Also joining HPU is third baseman Danny Lee of Saint Louis, a first-team Interscholastic League of Honolulu selection, who signed last year.
