ARENAFOOTBALL2
Bakersfield delivers on guarantee to beat Islanders

Advertiser Staff

The Bakersfield Blitz came through on "Guaranteed Win Night," beating the visiting Hawaiian Islanders, 52-44, in an arenafootball2 game last night at Bakersfield, Calif.

The Blitz (6-3) took sole possession of first place in the West Division with their fourth win in five games, while the Islanders (5-4) lost consecutive games for the first time this season.

CHAD ELLIOT

Bakersfield's Chad Elliott completed 26 of 37 passes for 399 yards and eight touchdowns, and the Blitz scored 21 consecutive points in the fourth quarter.

Had the Islanders won on "Guaranteed Win Night," everyone in attendance last night at Centennial Garden would have been admitted free to the next Blitz home game June 19, or subsequent home games until the Blitz had won again.

The Islanders led 37-31 entering the fourth quarter, but Elliott completed a 43-yard pass to Steve Wofford — on fourth and 8 — to put Bakersfield ahead 38-37.

"Basically, we were right there and we couldn't knock them out," Islanders head coach Cal Lee said. "We were up six, but couldn't execute."

Elliott then connected with Eric Mahanke on 41- and 36-yard touchdown passes to give Bakersfield its largest lead at 52-37 late in the game.

The Islanders' Darnell Arceneaux hit younger brother Anthony Arceneaux for a score with 8.6 seconds remaining, but the Blitz recovered Kimo Naehu's onside kick to seal the victory.

"It was an exciting game; a good game right there to the very end," Lee said.

The Islanders missed two field goals and threw an interception on their first three possessions of the fourth quarter.

Five of Elliott's touchdown passes were 34 yards or longer against an Islanders' defense that usually takes away the vertical passing game, but concedes shorter routes.

"It kind of deflates a team," Lee said of the long strikes. "We tried to change it up here and there and when we went soft (Elliott would) hit receivers short. Then he hit the home run on us."

Anthony Arceneaux, who had three kickoff returns for touchdowns last week against the San Diego Riptide, had a 58-yard kickoff return early in the third quarter last night, which put the Islanders up 24-18.

"He's got so much confidence right now," Lee said.

Bakersfield kicker Ed Romo booted five kickoffs either off the scoreboard, whichÊhangs from the ceiling,Êor out of bounds with Anthony Arceneaux back to return kickoffs. The penalties place the ball on the 20.

"They didn't want him returning the ball. It's a real compliment to him," Lee said of Anthony Arceneaux.

Six of the game's nine lead changes occurred during the third quarter as the teams combined for 39 points.

Islanders defensive specialist Joshua Robinson had two interceptions late in the first half. The second set up a field goal by Naehu on the final play of the half, which put the Islanders up 17-12.

"He's one of our more steady defensive backs," Lee said. "It's a real credit to him from where he was last year to now."

In another West Division contest last night, San Diego (4-5) beat the Central Valley Coyotes (1-8), 39-10.

The Islanders, who fall to 2-3 on the road this season, will next host Central Valley (Fresno, Calif.) on Saturday and San Diego on June 19.
