Golfers take shot at Open at Turtle Bay

Eleven golfers will compete for a spot in the U.S. Open Championship in a sectional qualifier at Turtle Bay tomorrow.

Parker McLachlin, Kellen Watabu, Andrew Feldmann, Kevin Hayashi and seven others will face off in the 36-hole event.

The winner will play in the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in South Hampton New York, June 17 through 20.



BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Ring, partner advance to semifinals: Former University of Hawai'i men's volleyball player Jason Ring and George Roumain advanced to the semifinals of the AVP Manhattan Beach (Calif.) Open and will face Karch Kiraly and Punahou graduate Mike Lambert.

Also, Matt Fuerbringer and Casey Jennings will play Canyon Ceman and Mike Whitmarsh.

Last year's Manhattan Beach Open winners Eric Fonoimoana and Punahou graduate Kevin Wong lost in the first round of the tournament, but beat John Hyden and Andy Witt in the contender's bracket.

• Scott, Rogers ninth: Punahou graduate Sean Scott and partner Todd Rogers finished ninth at a SWATCH-FIVB tournament at Espinho, Portugal, yesterday.

After winning their opening two matches Friday in the $180,000 event, the 10th-seeded Rogers and Scott dropped a 58-minute three-setter to second-seeded Markus Dieckmann and Jonas Reckermann of Germany, 15-21, 21-15, 17-15, yesterday.



SOCCER

• Ching scores in loss: The San Jose Earthquakes dropped a 3-1 decision to the Canadian National Team last night in a match that ended in the 75th minute due to a power outage at Spartan Stadium at San Jose, Calif.

Brian Ching, a 1996 Kamehameha Schools graduate, scored San Jose's lone goal.



BASKETBALL

• UH-Hilo signs two basketball players: The University of Hawai'i-Hilo announced the signing of two basketball recruits yesterday.

Brian Graham is a 6-foot-4 junior guard from Caldwell, Idaho. Graham attended Columbia Basin Community College at Tri-Cities, Wash., where he earned second-team all conference honors before redshirting at Boise State last year.

Alex Graham (no relation), a junior from Redlands, Calif., averaged 2.2 points and 2.2 rebounds per game as a freshman at Long Beach State. The 7-footer saw his playing time with the 49ers reduced last year.



MEETING

• Three to speak at Quarterback Club: University of Hawai'i assistant football coach Vantz Singletary, UH assistant men's basketball coach Jackson Wheeler and former UH men's basketball player Mindaugas Burneika will speak at tomorrow's Quarterback Club.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Hotel Ballroom, and the program follows at noon.
