ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
OED gains a few hip new words

Advertiser Staff and News Services

The Oxford English Dictionary is trying to get hip. It has included "soccer mom" as one of more than 3,000 new and revised entries added to the online edition of the dictionary (www.oed.com). Other new entries include "Barbie," "number crunch," "ob-gyn," "air guitar," "wedgie," "off-off-off Broadway" and "racial profiling."

A showcase for short local films

Whip out those shorts.

No, not those shorts, your film shorts — because entries are being accepted now for the sixth annual 'Ohina: The Shortfilm Showcase 2004. 'Ohina provides a venue for Hawai'i filmmakers to show their creative talents in an October showcase, held at the Honolulu Academy of Arts Doris Duke Theatre. (Details, dates to be announced later.) Entry forms are available at Blockbuster stores. Films should be less than 30 minutes long. If they're 10 minutes or even shorter, all the better. Entry fee: $10; deadline: Aug. 6.

'Ohina Hotline: 428-0100 or www.ohina.org.

Sunproof duds for kids

Here's reason to go goo-goo ga-ga: baby swimwear that keeps out harmful rays. Sunscreen manufacturer Coppertone introduced brightly colored children's UV-protective items — even swimsuits that look like miniature wet suits, made of nylon and Lycra without any sort of chemical treatment and offer a sun protection factor of 50. These and other items are available in infant, toddler and child sizes.

See www.sunwiseswimwear.com for retailers. Longs Drugs in Mo'ili'ili carries the line, priced from $16.88 to $19.99.
