Preschool, senior center gets $50,000

Central Pacific Bank has awarded a $50,000 grant to the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center and its campaign to build a center on Maui as a tribute to the Japanese American veterans of World War II.

"In building our intergenerational center, the Nisei veterans are providing quality daycare for frail elders and a nurturing preschool for our keiki," said Clint Arnoldus, chairman, president and CEO of Central Pacific Bank. Construction of the preschool begins in late summer, with the construction of the senior daycare center to follow.


Money dispersed to local charities

Kapalua Maui Charities Inc. recently distributed the proceeds from the 2004 Mercedes Championships among a number of local charities. The recipients were: the Boy Scouts of America, Friends of the Children's Justice Center, Girl Scout Council of Hawaii, Hale Makua, J. Walter Cameron Center, ka Lima O Maui, Lahainaluna High School Athletic Department, Maui Junior Golf Association, Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation and The Art School at Kapalua.

A portion of the money was also set aside to support West Maui projects.


Anti-drug drama gets $25,000 grant

The Pacific Institute of Chemical Dependency Inc. has been awarded $25,000 by the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation for Project Why?, a musical drama that uses issues regarding illicit drugs to explore society's double standard and values, morality and compassion.

Performances at three schools and Blaisdell Concert Hall will take place in October.


Drive raises $14,000 for foodbank

The Hawaii Management Alliance Association raised $14,191 for the Hawaii Foodbank's annual food drive. The association recently held a luncheon to present a check to the food bank.
