ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
'Avenue Q' producer former O'ahu resident

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Kevin McCollum

"Avenue Q," which won three Tony Awards Sunday night including one for best musical, has an Island connection. Its producer is Kevin McCollum, who grew up on O'ahu and won a 1996 Tony for producing "Rent," and also brought the landmark "La Boheme" opera to Broadway.

"Avenue Q" — notable for its use of "Sesame Street"-type puppets, manipulated by singers-actors — upset big-scale competitors such as "Wicked" and "The Boy From Oz."

Ann Harada, the lone Asian trouper in the cast (who doesn't work with a puppet), is a 1981 Punahou grad.

'Potter' performs box-office magic

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" had the magic touch with a $93.7 million debut, the third-biggest opening weekend ever.

"Harry Potter" failed to ward off the spell of "Spider-Man" in 2002 or the $108 million debut of "Shrek 2" last month, but it did its own personal best. "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" launched the series in November 2001 with a $90.3 million debut on its way to a $317.6 million total. A year later, "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" opened with $88.4 million, finishing at $262 million.

The third in the popular sorcery series took over the top box-office spot from "Shrek 2."

Jackie Chan

If money is no object — and Jackie Chan is one of your idols — tickets are still available for tonight's sneak preview of his big remake of "Around The World In 80 Days" at the Neal Blaisdell Concert Hall.

Tickets are $35, $50 and $100 for the fund-raiser. The show starts at 7 p.m. and Chan promises to sing a couple of tunes. Call the Blaisdell box office, (877) 750-4400, or see www.ticketmaster.com. The film opens nationwide on June 16.

Chan's appearance coincides with the grand opening events this week at his Ala Moana Center restaurant. (Yes, we know it opened in December, but it's his show). That shindig, alas, is private.
