Public can offer condolences to Reagan family

Gov. Linda Lingle is inviting the public to sign messages of condolences to the family of the late President Ronald Reagan, who died Saturday.

Artillerymen at Marine Corps Base Hawai'i fire a blank round in tribute to former President Ronald Reagan, who died Saturday. A one-gun salute will be fired at the base every half hour from 8 a.m. to sunset today.

The public can sign the messages honoring Reagan in the governor's office at the State Capitol or the governor's liaison offices on the Neighbor Islands today and tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The signed messages will be sent to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif., where he will be entombed on Friday. On that day Hawai'i will join the nation in observing a National Day of Mourning in tribute to Reagan.

"President Reagan had a tremendous impact on the people of Hawai'i, and this heartfelt message from our residents is one way to remember and honor his legacy and to extend our aloha to Mrs. Reagan and her family," said Lingle, who has ordered all flags at state buildings to fly at half-staff until July 5.
