Kop shoots 3-under 68 to lead Cup qualifying

Four-time champion Brandan Kop shot a 3-under-par 68 yesterday to lead the qualifying for the 96th Manoa Cup at Oahu Country Club.

Edwin Yokoyama, Ryan Perez and Todd Rego were next with 70s.

Defending champion Kellen-Floyd Asao received an automatic berth.

The tournament, which decides the state amateur match play champion, tees off today with first-round matches starting at 7 a.m. Second-round matches will begin at 11.

VOLLEYBALL

Three Warriors earn academic honors

University of Hawai¨i men's volleyball players Joshua Stanhiser, Jose Jose Delgado and Matt Bender have been named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Academic All-Conference team, a first-time honor for all three.

Stanhiser, who recently earned a bachelor's degree in zoology, achieved a 3.23 grade point average.

Bender, a sophomore majoring in computer science, earned a 3.23 GPA.

Delgado, a sophomore majoring in business, had a 3.01 GPA.

Two Kamehameha graduates also earned conference academic honors. Bryson Metz, a sophomore outside hitter for University of Pacific, had a 3.04 GPA and Pepperdine junior libero James Ka achieved a 3.11 GPA.

OBITUARY

Former marathon champion dies

Jack Foster, who won the Honolulu Marathon in 1975, died after his bike collided with a car Saturday in Rotorua, New Zealand.

He was 72.

Foster's victory in the 1975 marathon nearly didn't happen. He was awakened that morning by a call from the hotel switchboard operator. He then went on to finish the race in 2 hours, 17.24 minutes.

Foster also competed in the 1972 and 1976 Olympics, won a silver medal in the marathon at the 1974 Commonwealth Games and once held the world's best time for a 20-mile race.

Kalani names Uemae boys basketball coach

Ned Uemae has been named boys varsity basketball coach at Kalani High School.

Uemae, a 1995 graduate of Kalani and a special education teach at his alma mater, succeeds Reid Sagawa.

Meanwhile, Kalani is seeking coaches for the following sports: air riflery, cross country, cheerleading, paddling and girls' soccer.

Inspiring athletes will be profiled

"Inspiring Island Athletes" will be profiled on Emme Tomimbang's Island Moments show on June 17 on KHON (channel 2).

Featured athletes will include pro baseball player Benny Agbayani, former pro football player Jesse Sapolu, University of Hawai'i football coach June Jones, Olomana Golf Development Center coach Casey Nakama, and legendary golfer Arnold Palmer.

The show will air at 9 p.m.
