GIRLS BASKETBALL ALL-STARS: ILH
Gravelle leader of youthful Iolani

Ginger Gravelle averaged 10.7 points a game, but it was her leadership that guided an Iolani team loaded with underclassmen.

As the only senior on an extremely youthful Iolani School girls basketball team, Ginger Gravelle had a big leadership role to carry this season.

Her performance was not only measured by the Raiders' surprise second-place finish, but also by her being named Interscholastic League of Honolulu Player of the Year in a vote of ILH coaches.

Gravelle, a versatile 5-foot-10 forward, helped the Raiders finish the regular season in a tie for first place with defending state champion Punahou despite having one senior and one junior on the roster.

Gravelle averaged 10.7 points per game, including a season-high 23 points in a 51-43 victory over St. Francis. She also had 22 points in a second win over St. Francis that forced a playoff with Punahou for the league title.

Gravelle is joined on the first team by sophomore teammate Hennasea Tokumura, St. Francis senior Monica Chock, Kamehameha senior India Soo and Punahou juniors Shanna-Lei Dacanay and Christine Takara.

Tokumura, a quick point guard who is not afraid to shoot the 3-pointer, averaged 8.8 points per game and sank 12 shots from beyond the arc.

Against Punahou in the second round, she swished a 3-pointer with three minutes left to give Iolani a 32-30 edge the Raiders would hold on to for their first victory over the Buffanblu in at least four years.

Chock averaged 11.1 points per game, and scored 15 against Iolani and 12 against Punahou. Against Iolani, she sank five 3-pointers.

Soo, another quick point guard, led a young Kamehameha team to a six-game win streak — including wins over Punahou and Iolani — after a 4-4 start.

Dacanay, a point guard, and Takara, a wing, provided valuable veteran leadership to a Punahou squad that had only one senior. In the title-clinching victory over Iolani, the two juniors helped control the ball as the Buffanblu held the Raiders scoreless in the final period.

Punahou's Mike Taylor was named Coach of the Year.
