Q. Is there a way to get an e-mail every time a new virus is released on the Internet?

A. Several free e-mail services can notify you about viruses and other threats, as well as operating system updates to block them. Here are four:

Q. I want to print parts of e-mail in America Online. When I highlight the part and select the print window, the print selection option is grayed out. Help!

A. There are a couple ways around this. One is to use a word processor. Highlight the portion of text you want printed. Press Ctrl+C to copy it. Open your word processor and press Ctrl+V to paste in the portion. Print from there. Or you can check your e-mail on the Web at http://webmail.aol.com. After signing in, open the e-mail and drag your cursor over the part you want to print. Click File, Print. Click Selection and Print again.

Q. On your radio show, you've discussed different DVD formats. What format is used for commercial DVDs sold in stores? Are those +R or -R?

A. The R formats are only used when you burn a DVD. These DVDs are made with a laser. The heat from the laser makes the 0s and 1s; hence the term "burner." Commercial DVDs are molded. They have a different structure from the R's, with two layers on a single side. Their format is called DVD-9.

These discs hold 7.9 gigabytes of data, more than enough for a movie.
