QUICK BITES
Asian flavor fest today

By Wanda A. Adams
Advertiser Food Editor

Garlic and ginger, aromatics that figure prominently in East-West cuisines, are the centerpiece of a food festival this afternoon at Ward Warehouse, in the parking lot facing 'Auahi Street. Pau-hana time, check out the garlicky, gingery tastings from restaurants such as 3660 on the Rise, Roy's, Side Street Inn, Waikiki Park Hotel's Parc Café, Tropic Diner, Alan Wong's, JW Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa, Gordon Biersch, Port of Call Deli & Market/Big G's Catering and the Pacific Club.

You can try garlic ice cream from Dave's, fresh ginger ale, martini and margarita bars, fresh produce, a silent auction and more. The event, 4 to 10 p.m. today, benefits the Institute for Human Services and Friends of the Missing Child Center.

Maui's Hula Grill comes to Waikiki

Hula Grill Waikiki, a kissing cousin of Hula Grill Maui in Ka'anapali, opens this month in the newly renovated Outrigger Waikiki On the Beach hotel, in the space formerly occupied by the Sunset Terrace. It's a member of the TS Restaurants group, which includes popular Duke's Waikiki downstairs.

The 6,400-square-foot oceanfront restaurant and Plantation Bar resembles a plantation-era home, with lava rock planters, wood wainscoting, lauhala-lined ceilings and 'ohia log uprights and thatched roofing in the bar.

Chef Mark Kowalkowski (who is hopping over from Maui) prepares Hawaii Regional Cuisine, heavy on seafood with such signature dishes as Hawaiian Ceviche, Fire Grilled Ono and Screamin' Sesame Opah. Restaurateur and chef Peter Merriman, who opened the original Hula Grill, is TS' corporate chef in Hawai'i, and owns Merriman's in Waimea, is a part-owner in this restaurant, a joint partnership of T S Restaurants and Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Hawaii.

Kula farm now home to all things lavender

CHANG
The well-known lavender farm on Kula's Waipoli Road on Maui has changed its name. Known variously as Maui Kula Lavender and Nanea a'o Kula, the farm's operations (growing lavender, hosting tours, teas and classes, creating lavender products) are being gathered under the name Ali'i Kula Lavender. (Long-time flower grower Ali'i Chang is a partner and "lavender engineer".)

The farm is home to more than 30 varieties and a number of culinary products (including lavender sugar, fabulous in a plain butter cookie). They've just begun serving lavender mango sorbet made by Roselani Ice Cream, and lavender-scented coffee made by Maui Coffee Roasters. Visit: www.aliikulalavender.com; (808) 878-8090.
