Former Honolulu bishop hospitalized

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The new bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Richmond was hospitalized yesterday after feeling sick earlier in the day, the diocese said.

Francis X. DiLorenzo

Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo, 62, who was installed as the diocese's new leader on May 24, was admitted to Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center by a physician who ordered a series of tests, said Anne Edwards, the bishop's secretary. The examination found nothing wrong.

"He was just feeling a little bit out of it," Edwards said. "He decided to not take chances and went to the doctor."

Edwards did not know when the bishop would be released. A diocesan representative in Honolulu said it was expected that DiLorenzo would be admitted overnight for monitoring.

DiLorenzo, who served as bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu for almost 11 years before his appointment to Richmond, had a minor heart attack about three years ago. He has since been on a diet to lose weight and now weighs about 300 pounds.

The bishop's scheduled visit to the Church of the Resurrection in Portsmouth today was postponed.
