Nonprofit names its new officers

Assistance League of Hawaii, a volunteer, nonprofit philanthropic organization, recently inducted its new officers at a luncheon held at the Waialae Country Club.

They are: president, Margie Van Swearingen; vice president, Pat Sanborn; recording secretary, Pat Murphy; corresponding secretary, Eileen Urquhart; and treasurer, Marti Frensley.


Salvation Army shuffles leaders

Majs. David and Sharron Hudson are the newly appointed divisional leaders of The Salvation Army's Hawaiian and Pacific Islands Division. They succeed Majs. Ralph and Ivy Hood, who are transferring to The Salvation Army's Territorial Headquarters in Long Beach, Calif., to become territorial secretary for personnel and territorial corps ministry secretary, respectively.


Case lists top three in art contest

U.S. Rep. Ed Case recently announced the winners of his districtwide congressional art contest "Kaha Ki'i: An Artistic Discovery" during an awards ceremony at the King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel.

The winners are: first place, Mary Ann Tasani, Leilehua High School, for "Theresa"; second place, Kenneth Mailo, Baldwin High School, "The Uprising Conversion"; and third place, Emmy Escano, Island School, "In Motion."


St. Francis girl wins map contest

Lauryn Ando of St. Francis School is one of the national winners of the "Can You Find the Mapman" contest sponsored by Junior Scholastic Magazine. The contest encourages students to apply many of the skills they have learned throughout the year in geography.


High school scholars named

Recipients of the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship have been announced.

The Hawai'i high school seniors are: Tiffani Ching, Punahou School; Lindsey Doi, Kamehameha Schools; Derek Fujio, Mid-Pacific Institute; Justin Furuta, Punahou School; Sarah Kama, Kamehameha Schools; Brad Kamitaki, Iolani School; Iris Kim, Roosevelt High School; David Kobayashi, Iolani School; Crystal Shimabukuro, Punahou School; Patrick Sullivan, Punahou School; Tyler Tamashiro, Mililani High School; Christine Wong, Punahou School; Justin Yoshida, Moanalua High School.

Also receiving scholarships were: Jonathan-James Eno, Baldwin High School; Jonathan Hirata, King Kekaulike High School; Rachel Hodara, Seabury Hall; Natalie Kamauoha, Kahuku High and Intermediate School; Melissa Kunz, Konawaena High School; Trent Kyono, Baldwin High School; Christina Marzo, Punahou School; Michael Mayeda, Castle High School; Stephanie Miyasaki, Kapa'a High School; Chelsea Nagata, Maui High School; Jordan Otomo, Baldwin High School; Kari Tanimoto, Pearl City High School; and Trina Ueno, Lahainaluna High School.


Meteorologist trainee honored

Treena Loos, a meteorologist trainee with the National Weather Service-Honolulu Forecast Office through the University of Manoa Cooperative Education program, was awarded the 2004 National Cooperative Education Student of the Year award.

Loos received a $500 scholarship from the National Cooperative Education and Internship Association.

Loos, a graduate student in the Department of Meteorology at UH-Manoa, earned the national honor based on her co-op work contributions, academic achievements and service to the university and community.
